Collecting autographed sports memorabilia is a fun and exciting hobby for fans who want something more personal than a trading card. There really are no limits to what people can and do collect.

Probably the most sought after collectibles include actual sports equipment, such as baseballs, footballs, basketballs, boxing gloves, etc. In this article we are going to talk about autographed baseballs.

Because it is one of the oldest and most popular sports in the U.S., collecting autographed baseballs has been a hobby for generations of Americans. It can also be a quite lucrative avocation, which is why many part time collectors become full time collectors, traders and sellers.

If you are interested in starting you own autographed baseball collection, there are a few things you should know. But before we proceed it is important to consider why you are actually getting into collecting. If you are doing it for investment purposes, it will inevitably feel like work. Not only is there an awful lot of research involved, but you will undoubtedly spend a lot of time on the road tracking down desirable balls. You will also have to attend sports auctions and conventions in cities across the nation as well as keeping a close eye on the internet for good deals. We say this not to dissuade you, but to let you know that sports memorabilia is an incredibly competitive field and it is most certainly a full-time job.

That is why most of the people that collect autographed baseballs are fans before they become collectors. Ordinarily, fans begin by collecting the autographs of their favorite players. They can either buy these balls or receive an autograph in person. Either way, an autographed piece of memorabilia is personal and special and most fans couldn’t care less what the ball is actually worth.

The most challenging part about collecting autographed baseballs is of course obtaining the autograph. While attending a trade show or a sports convention is probably the easiest way to get an autograph of your favorite player, you will almost always be charged a fee. Obtaining an autograph really can be a challenge, especially if you are an adult. After all, sports stars are far more likely to offer to sign free autographs for children than for adults. This means that you may have to get creative. One of the easiest ways to get an autograph is to attend events that few autograph seekers go to. For example, following a team to spring training might give you the perfect opportunity to obtain as many autographs as you need.

Another great tip is to actually send baseballs to your favorite players. We know, it sounds too easy. But you’d be surprised how many players actually take the time to return an autographed baseball. Just make certain that you send the ball directly to the team and enclose a pen and a self-addressed mailer with the appropriate postage for return shipping. It also helps to write a nice note telling the player why you are a fan and when and where you first saw him play.

Video: The Art of the Autograph:

Baseball is much more than a sport. It is often a time when family members get together again, recalling the times when baseball games used to be easily affordable and summer practices took up countless evenings. It reminds us of a time when autumn meant a lot more than Halloween - it was playoff time! That is very likely the reason why many people love to collect baseball associated memorabillia - especially signed baseballs.
